Doxycycline is a medicine that belongs to the group of antibiotics and is intended for the treatment of bacterial infections. This drug can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Doxycycline can make birth control pills less effective. Make sure you use another reliable method of birth control (non-hormonal) to avoid getting pregnant. Before starting to take doxycycline tell your doctor about any other medicines you are currently taking to avoid drug interaction. Doxycycline is not recommended for children younger than 8 as it may cause permanent teeth discoloration.
If you display any of the following side effects you may be having an allergic reaction to doxycycline: swelling of your lips, tongue, face or throat, hives, trouble breathing. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or wear protective clothing and sunscreen with a high SPF factor to avoid a sun burn. Some of the serious side effects of doxycycline that are rarely reported include yellowing of the eyes and skin (jaundice), mood swings, stomach pain and vision changes. If you have a scheduled surgery tell your doctor about taking this medicine as you may be required to temporarily stop using it.
